  • Tattooing and Post-Tattoo Care Recommendations

A tattoo stands as a personalized and enduring work of art, but it also constitutes a form of skin injury. Consequently, diligent aftercare plays a pivotal role in safeguarding a newly acquired tattoo.

Outlined below are comprehensive guidelines on how to properly tend to a fresh tattoo, along with suggestions to maintain the appearance of your newly inked skin in pristine condition.

Thorough aftercare is pivotal in preventing infection and facilitating the optimal healing of the tattoo, resulting in the finest artwork outcome.

    Initial Covering

Upon completion of the tattooing process, the artist will apply a thin layer of tattoo jelly or appropriate aftercare product across the entire tattooed area. This will be followed by the application of plastic wrap or a bandage to fully cover the region.

It is crucial to avoid removing the protective covering prematurely; the plastic wrap should remain in place for at least 1-2 hours post-tattooing. This is due to the body's natural discharge of a liquid blend of blood, referred to as weep or ooze, which aids in cleansing the wounded skin. To contain this fluid, the plastic covering should only be removed after proper handwashing. Once removed, ensure to clean any utilized surfaces, and promptly dispose of the wrapping to prevent cross-contamination.

    Initial Washing

Following the designated time, usually within 1 to 2 hours, the protective wrapping can be removed, and the tattooed area washed. After thorough handwashing, cleanse the tattoo gently using hypoallergenic soap and warm water, ensuring the removal of the weepy substance.

After washing, delicately pat the skin dry with a clean towel and allow it to air-dry for up to 10 minutes. Upon complete drying, it is recommended to apply a thin layer of TATTOO AFTERCARE to the tattooed area. During this phase, leave the tattoo exposed to allow the skin to breathe.

The tattoo should be washed 2 to 3 times daily, with intervals for drying, followed by reapplication of aftercare ointment.

    Continued Washing

Sustained cleansing is of paramount importance. If engaging in sports, gym activities, or occupying environments prone to contamination (dusty, unclean, clinical, or involving food), the tattooed area must be covered with plastic wrap during the activity duration. It is essential to refrain from applying ointment beneath the wrap. Afterward, upon returning home, proceed to wash, allow to air-dry, and reapply tattoo ointment.

For extensive tattoos, it is advisable to wrap the area overnight during the initial 2 to 3 days. After cleaning the tattoo and eliminating excess aftercare ointment, pat dry and wrap the area before sleep. This measure prevents adhering to bed linens and safeguards against pigment loss during detachment. If attachment occurs, soak the linen and area to facilitate detachment.

    First Week

While your tattoo artist may provide specific advice, the following aftercare recommendations are suggested. Initially, adhere to the artist's instructions regarding moisturizer usage and swimming. Moisturizer varies from aftercare ointment.

In the initial days, the tattooed skin might exhibit warmth and a reddish hue. The tattoo's colors may appear overly vibrant in contrast to the surrounding skin. Gradually, the colors will mellow as the healing process advances, a result of pigment settling within the skin. Around 30% of the tattoo pigment might be shed during this phase, resulting in lightening once the settling is complete.

For the initial 3 to 6 weeks, avoid exposing the tattoo to saltwater or chlorinated water except during washing. Such exposure can hinder the healing process due to skin drying and potential pigment reactions. Protective clothing and post-healing sunscreen application are crucial for sustaining the tattoo's longevity.

    Managing Scabs and Itch

Scabs may form during the initial days, and ink may surface through the skin, necessitating gentle washing. Refrain from picking scabs or scratching the skin, as scabs will naturally fall off, taking care not to disrupt the healing process. Itching is common; apply aftercare to alleviate discomfort or gently scratch around the non-tattooed areas.

    Week Two

During this phase, scabs will begin to flake off, occasionally presenting in the shower. Allow these to naturally shed, and exercise caution while washing and moisturizing to avoid damaging the healing tattoo.

Itchy sensations may persist; however, refrain from scratching. It is also time to transition to regular moisturizers for tattoo care.

    Continued Healing

In the final healing stage, which requires patience, larger scabs will have cleared, and smaller remnants may appear. These minor scabs and dry skin bits will resolve over time. Some ingrown hairs might surface, necessitating gentle loofah exfoliation during showers.

The outer skin layers should be fully healed by the third week, although inner layers may require additional time. Body friction areas might take longer to heal.

Routine moisturizing, careful skin maintenance, and safeguarding the tattoo from sun exposure are vital for maintaining vibrancy and clarity.

    Ink Rejection and Allergies

The body may occasionally reject ink colours or trigger allergies during the healing process. Raised, painful rashes or scabbing may indicate an allergic reaction. Red pigments can be problematic for sensitive skin. An allergy test before tattooing is prudent, although reactions might not surface until after the tattoo is completed.

In case of rash or allergic reaction, seek medical attention. Consult your tattoo artist, as well as your General Practitioner if necessary. Avoid using unapproved lotions or products and respect the tattoo artist's recommendations.

    Parting Thoughts

The aftercare regimen you adopt significantly influences the healing process and the outcome of your tattoo. If complications arise, consult your tattoo artist for guidance and potential remedies.

Embrace the journey of tattoo healing while adhering to recommended practices. Remember that artists invest in their craft and have boundaries; be a respectful and engaged participant in the process.

Enjoy your new ink, and feel free to reach out if you require further assistance!
